ESMOD Paris 2nd year
collage created from picture taken by Tim Flach
Thousands of hues of vivid colours, fish speeding through forests of tentacles, octopuses calmly carried by the gentle currents, such an exceptionally rich ecosystem... so brutally converted into overwhelmingly silent whiteness.
According to National Geographic, coral reefs are one of the most beautiful and biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, but containing a quarter of all marine life! Moreover, reefs are vital for human populations, buffering coastlines from storms, sustaining fisheries, and luring tourists. Coral exists symbiotically with photosynthetic algae, which live in its tissues and provide essential nourishment and their exceptional colors. But high temperatures and other stresses can turn algae toxic. When this occurs, the algae may die or be ejected by the coral, a process known as bleaching, as the coral’s clear tissue and white calcium carbonate skeleton are exposed. If the coral can’t reestablish its bond with algae, it will starve or succumb to disease. In the last 20 years, around half of all coral reefs have died, and the remainder are threatened by pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
But there is HOPE...
There have been projects that aim to save and restore coral reefs and some are very succesfull. SHEBA®, the pet food brand and part of Mars Inc., is restoring Hope Reef as a first step toward restoring coral reefs at sites all around the world. So far, more than 840 reef stars have grown coral cover from less than 5% to more than 55% in just 18 months;
70 to 80% coral cover is expected within five years.
Hearing such news, my hope for a better tomorrow, that is constantly being smashed my climate crisis news every day, has been slowly growing. Hence, I desired to create suit capsule collection that will express this feeling, being inspired by shapes, colours and successful revival of the coral reefs.
The GROWING HOPE will flourish only if all of us act NOW.
